Welcome to the Human Genome Sciences (HGS) site for investigator-initiated sponsored research.
Our Investigator-Initiated Sponsored Research (IISR) program provides support for research, initiated and sponsored by researchers, that advances medical knowledge, enhances scientific understanding of disease or may lead to novel interventions.
Organizations we support
Grants may be provided to:
- Hospitals
- Community health centers
- Academic medical centers, universities and colleges
- Physician practices
- Other health care facilities
We do not provide investigator-initiated sponsored research support to individuals.
What can and cannot be funded
Types of Research Eligible for Support:
- Clinical studies of uses of HGS products for autoimmune diseases, cancer, and hepatitis. Studies involving patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and other diseases with immunologic dysfunction associated with autoantibody formation will be given highest priority.
- Observational studies such as epidemiology studies and outcomes research studies with a primary focus being to enhance scientific understanding of autoimmune disease, cancer, and hepatitis.
- In vitro or in vivo studies with requests for funding or product.
Studies involving patients with, or that enhance the scientific understanding of, systemic lupus erythematosus and other diseases with immunologic dysfunction associated with autoantibody formation will be given highest priority.
We will accept investigator proposals for research to be conducted within or outside the U.S. Please review the information provided below before applying on-line.
To be eligible for support, the investigator must accept full responsibility for all aspects of the study, including trial design, implementation, conduct, data analysis/interpretation, communication of study results (eg, publications), and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including any required submissions to regulatory health authorities.
Treatment of Materials Submitted
Intellectual Property Rights. All materials submitted when applying for support of an Investigator-Initiated Sponsored Research project must be non-confidential and must not contain any markings indicating confidentiality. By submitting your materials to HGS for review, you understand that we will not treat the information as confidential or proprietary. It is necessary to refer a submission to a number of different persons in the Company to ascertain whether or not a research proposal is of interest.
HGS has no intention of publicizing the content of any submission, but we assume no obligation to keep it confidential. By submitting an investigator-initiated sponsored research proposal, you acknowledge the following conditions:
- The submission is not made in confidence and is not accompanied by any reservation or condition whatsoever which imposes upon HGS any obligation or restriction with regard to its use.
- The submitter’s rights shall be only those given under the patent laws and/or under any written contract to which the submitter and HGS may mutually agree.
- The submitter must be the originator of the information and materials or has been authorized by the originator to provide information and materials on their behalf.
Application Requirements
Applying for research support is a two-step process: 1) submission of an initial Concept Proposal that, if of interest to HGS, is followed by 2) submission of a detailed Protocol with budget. A request for submission of a protocol should not be considered a commitment to provide funds.
All proposals will be evaluated by our Scientific Committee for:
- Overall merit, scientific or medical value, and innovation
- Alignment with HGS’ overall mission
- Feasibility, including availability of resources
- Adherence to ethical principles
Proposals received in therapeutic areas in which HGS has alliance partnerships will be shared with our partner who may have different criteria for evaluation.
Submission of a research grant proposal does not guarantee funding or materials. HGS support of an investigator-initiated sponsored research study is not contingent in any way on the use, purchase, prescribing or recommending for prescribing of any current or future HGS product.
Once a tentative decision to fund a research proposal has been made, an Investigator-Initiated Sponsored Research Agreement must be executed by the grant recipient and HGS. No funds or support will be disbursed until a fully executed Agreement is received by HGS.
